How Much Is My Number Plate Worth?

It depends on the plate. Most private plates are worth a few hundred pounds. Short dateless plates, low numbers and plates that clearly spell a popular name or word can be worth thousands, and the rarest change hands for six figures or more.

A free private plate valuation is the quickest way to get a real figure for yours. In the meantime, the table below shows where your plate is likely to sit.

What Is My Plate Type Typically Worth?

Every plate is valued individually, but its format gives a good first clue. Find the style that matches your plate to see the range similar plates typically sell for on the open market.

What Affects the Value of a Number Plate?

Length. Fewer characters almost always means more value. A two-character plate like D 7 is far rarer than a dateless plate like KL 5678, and priced accordingly.

Low numbers, especially 1. The number 1 carries a big premium. A plate like S1 ABC will usually be worth many times more than S999 ABC, even though only the numbers are different.

Names, words and initials. Plates that spell a name, word or common set of initials are in demand. The more cleanly a plate reads, the more it’s worth. Plates can’t be legally mis-spaced on the road, so a plate that reads naturally with correct spacing beats one that only works with creative spacing.

Age and style. Dateless plates don’t show the age of a vehicle, so they can go on any car. That widens the pool of buyers and pushes values up. Prefix, suffix and current style plates can’t make a vehicle look newer than it is, which limits who can use them.

Demand and trends. Popular names, trending words and in-demand initials all move with the market. We value plates based on what’s selling now, not what sold years ago.

On a vehicle or on retention. Whether your plate is on a car or held on a retention certificate doesn’t change its value. It only affects the paperwork when you sell.

What Happens If I Decide to Sell?

Nothing happens unless you want it to. Your valuation is yours to keep, with no obligation to do anything with it.

If you do want to sell, we’ll agree on a price with you and put your plate in front of buyers who are actively looking for private registrations. You don’t need to advertise it yourself, deal with time wasters or negotiate with strangers.

Once your plate sells, we handle the DVLA transfer and arrange secure payment to you.

Number Plates We Value

Dateless and cherished plates. Plates with no year identifier, from just two characters up to seven. These are the most sought-after and often the most valuable.

Northern Irish plates. Recognisable by the letter I or Z, Northern Irish plates are dateless, so they can go on any vehicle. They’re popular with drivers who want an age-free plate at a lower price.

Prefix and suffix plates. Plates issued between 1963 and 2001, where the year letter sits at the start or end. Values depend heavily on what the plate spells.

Current style plates. Plates in the AB12 CDE format, issued from 2001 onwards. The most valuable are those where the numbers help spell a name or word.

Name and initial plates. Whatever the format, plates that clearly spell a name or initials are valued on how well they read and how popular the name is.

Does the DVLA Value Number Plates?

No. The DVLA sells new, unissued registrations and runs its own auctions, but it doesn’t value or buy back plates once they’ve been sold. To find out what your plate is worth, or to sell it, you’ll need a number plate specialist like us.
